Solstice

Part of the Amazon product description for PJ Hoover's Solstice says, "Where Mythology and Dystopia meet..." which instantly intrigues me. I have always been a fan of books that weave in mythology, such as The Lightning Thief, Tera Lynn Childs' Oh. My. Gods. and Goddess Boot Camp, and Pandora Gets Jealous. Dystopian novels always draw me in as well, all those what ifs.

I enjoyed the blend that Hoover created in her YA debut. It starts out with prominent dystopian characteristics, a future in which global warming has caused dramatic changes in everyday life, specifically focusing on Piper, her mother, and close friend Chloe in their Texan community. However, Piper yearns to break free from her mother's firm grip of control. One weekend she gains her chance.

In comes the mythological pieces... So many possibilities and a whole new layer of what ifs. I enjoyed getting to know Piper's world and to go along with her into her journey navigating the clash between what she has always known and the new world that begins to shape her life.

Just as I enjoyed Hoover's middle grades novels, this YA novel held my attention making me excited to have a chance to keep scrolling down to see what would happen next! I look forward to seeing where Hoover's imagination will take her with future projects.
